Many students have never swung a hammer, planted a garden, or painted an interior wall. During the afternoon program, students have an opportunity to acquire these and other basic vocational and daily living skills. The mastery of these skills increases self-esteem, as well as moves these students one step closer to independent living. The D.O. students and staff collaborate to work on a variety of properties throughout Addison County. Most of the jobs include landscaping, home renovation, basic carpentry, painting, repair and maintenance of the various properties throughout Addison County. Students additionally work in partnership with the D.O. Science Program, building and repairing the Dead Creek and Snake Mountain raptor banding stations, as well as executing a county-wide Barn Owl reintroduction project.
